Our friend Craig LeHoullier, who wrote a book I adore called Epic Tomatoes, grows heirloom tomatoes, which often have interesting stories. Craig named one variety ‘Cherokee Purple’ because he got the seeds from a man in ­Tennessee who got them from his neighbor, whose family was given seeds by Cherokee Indians about 100 years ago.

Another variety, called ‘Mortgage Lifter’, is a large red tomato. It was ­created by a man named Marshall Cletis Byles in the 1930s. He cross-pollinated different varieties until he got something he liked. Then he grew and sold plants for one dollar each, and eventually sold enough plants to pay off the mortgage on his house!
